It’s Spring and we are finally getting our hands back in the dirt at the Science Museum of Long Island (SMLI)! We’ll be establishing a mother orchard of American Chestnut trees on the museum grounds and planting Willow saplings by Leeds Pond. The Willows, when grown, are intended to shade out invasive plants which are detrimental to the water ecosystem.
We will also clear the property of invasive plants, so that beneficial trees and understory plants can thrive. The experts at Spadefoot Design and Construction will guide us as we help restore the ecological health of the land. Please join us, Transition Town Port Washington, at SMLI, 1526 N. Plandome Road, Manhasset, Saturday May 20, 3:00 - 7:00 pm. RSVP to info@smli.org.
Please wear boots, long pants & sleeves, garden gloves and mask, of course. And if you have, bring a shovel, clippers and mattock (a quick google search might be in order) for clearing vines and invasive growth.
