Did you know plastic takes more than 400 years to degrade? Over the last 60 years, mass production of plastics has created 8.3 billion metric tons with only 9% recycled.
By 2050, there could be 12 billion metric tons of plastic waste in landfills and seeping into the natural environment. That is 35,000 times as heavy as the Empire State Building. With major oil companies facing the prospect of reduced demand for fuel, they are increasing production for plastics and petroleum products. This impact goes beyond waste - production and afterlife are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.
For the first time a federal bill is being proposed. The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act addresses the root causes of plastic pollution by holding producers accountable and reducing the plastic production.
Presenter Alexis Goldsmith, Beyond Plastics National Organizer and moderator Hildur Palsdottir, Transition Town member will discuss ways to tackle our plastic pollution crisis and advance regenerative, inclusive solutions that are good for our environment, our health, and our economy. This free event is streaming on Zoom.
