Looking for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)** to join this year? NOW is the time to line up your source for nutritious fruits and veggies. WHERE to go? The fair will be set up at the Sisters of St. Joseph (behind Building #4), 1725 Brentwood Rd., Brentwood. Our friend, Bhavani with I Eat Green together with Slow Food North Shore and North East Organic Farmers Association (https://nofany.org/) have organized the Long Island CSA Fair to showcase all the great local farms offering shares this year. **Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) is a great way for consumers (you) to get farm fresh, seasonal food directly from the farmer.
Before the season begins, the farmer offers a certain number of shares of the upcoming harvest to the public. Typically you buy a full share or you share a half share with a friend. You agree to a location and time to pick up your box or basket full of goodies. Some CSA’s include seasonal items from other growers like maple syrup or fresh eggs.
Being part of a CSA entitles you to a share of the harvest and with it comes the opportunities and risks of farming. Some years are great tomato years, in other years peppers are doing much better. Some weeks, you might receive too many beets when you wanted lettuce. You will join a community of like-minded individuals. You will learn about new vegetables and recipes and eat according to the season. CSA pick-up day is the highlight of the week, with surprises in store and a chance to share the bounties of the season with family and friends.
