Neighbors protecting the natural habitat of the Port Washington Peninsula

Transition Town Port Washington works to protect and improve our community’s natural habitats. We educate, advocate, and take action to enhance the environment on the Port Washington Peninsula. Join us!

Education

TTPW keeps the community informed through engaging educational programs and local events. We offer citizen science programs, climate action community events, youth programming, and family-friendly nature talks. We also partner with local organizations like the Port Washington Public Library, the Science Museum of Long Island, and Landmark Theater to bring environmental topics to the forefront through rich programming that deepens our understanding of environmental issues and drives meaningful action.

Advocacy

Supporting Our Community
and Environment

TTPW participates in local hearings, town meetings, and community events, collaborating with local and state officials to push for effective environmental policies and actions. We also build partnerships with like-minded organizations that share our vision to support legislation that promotes sustainability and resilience. From letter-writing campaigns to rallies, we make sure our collective voice is heard and strengthens protections for our natural resources and shapes our community's future for the better.

Action

TTPW has a real impact on our community and actively advances our shared goal of a healthier, more sustainable future with a multitude of initiatives. We established the Port Washington Coalition for Biodiversity, uniting local organizations that collectively steward the vast majority of our peninsula's wilderness to work together to protect biodiversity in our area. Through water testing and oyster gardening, we engage citizens in directly safeguarding the health of our waterways. Our ongoing work with area schools have reduced waste and inspired the next generation to keep doing better. We continue to add and support initiatives that effect substantive change in our community.

Active Initiatives, Real Results

“I do have reasons for hope: our clever brains, the resilience of nature, the indomitable human spirit, and above all the commitment of young people when they’re empowered to take action:

— Jane Goodall

Partnership

Collaboration lies at the core of TTPW's mission. We actively partner with organizations throughout Port Washington, Long Island, and New York State to drive meaningful environmental change. As proud members of NYRenews and CURE100, we are deeply committed to advancing sustainable and just solutions. Additionally, we are a part of the Transition Town Network, a global movement of communities coming together to reimagine and rebuild our world.
